Caving Definitions

Active Wet.
Aven Big hole in floor or roof of cave. Renowned for eating cavers.
Bat Cute and furry cave dweller that craps everywhere. Protected by law, but rather cute, all the same. Shame about the crap, though.
Bear Original inhabitant of many caves. Apparently evicted by tourists.
Below! Shouted if something is dislodged from above. If heard, don't look up. Keep your head down and run away!
Bobbin Nutters descending device offering bugger all control. Hilarious.
Bolt Dubious means of attaching hangers to the cave wall.
Carbide Old method of producing light by generating acetylene gas. Smells like old farts. Used by old farts.
Cave A dark hole in the ground, inherently dark.
Cave Diver See lunatic. Nuttier than squirrel shit.
Chair See Table.
Choke Impassable area of boulders, gravel, cavers etc.
Choke Result of breaking wind in confined area.
Chunder See Purge.
Cowsh Polite term for cow turd, often found in extraordinary quantities.
Cowstails Rope safety line. Used to prevent fall. Contains no animal products.
Crawl Low section of passages, renowned for reducing kneecaps to tears.
Crawl Most stable method of returning from pub.
Dig Lengths cavers will go to in the name of sport. If no cave exists, make one. Diggers will tell you it is an art and science. Yeah, right.
Fall Whatever, don't do it. It hurts. Lots.
Flat Out A crawl that is very low, i.e. one ear to the roof, one to the floor.
Freeclimb Climb without the aid of rope or safety net (see insurance).
Furry Suit Adult size baby grow, designed to ensure caver is kept warm whilst looking like a fleece fetishist.
Helictite Bizarre little formations, often found in small groups, not common, don't mess. Looks like pissed beansprouts.
Helmet Wear one, if you don't, it hurts, lots.
Jump Whatever, don't do it. It hurts. Lots. See fall.
Keyhole Keyhole shaped passage.
Keyhole Vital part of door impossible to locate when rat arsed.
Krab Short for Karabiner, shiny metal clip thing. Don't confuse with crabs, they bite (and itch).
Ladder Dubious looking metal ladder for climbing pitches, used with a lifeline. Marginally safer than climbing the wall (only joking!).
Landowner Owns land around cave. Most unstable species known to man.
Lifeline Rope used to stop you falling a huge distance down a hole.
Lunatic Someone who uses scuba gear in a cave for pleasure.
Mountaineer Caver friendly, potential caver, prone to jumping.
Mud Often found in caves, often thrown at freshers. Tastes like Cowsh.
Ooooo Factor How much people go "oooo" and "wow" when they see something shiny and/or expensive. Caver affliction.
Oversuit Protects caver from being torn to pieces and from getting to soggy.
Plummet Term of endearment for the Petzl Stop.
Pot A hole in the floor.
Pot Not so legal filler for ciggies.
Pretties Formations and stuff that are nice to look at.
Punch What you get if you damage Pretties, usually to a part of the body that doesn't mark, i.e. kidneys etc.
Punch Demonic concoction of alcohol and nitro made by the President on the Christmas trip. Be afraid, be very afraid.
Purge Oral ejection that usually follows consuming Punch.
Showcave Inherently not dark hole in the ground. Inhabited by tourists.
Spreader Means of tying ladder to cave.
Spreader Bondage accessory not used in SRT.
SRT Single Rope Technique. Using a collection of bondage accessories, you can ascend and descend a single rope. Fun.
Stalagmite A cave formation that stands up.
Stalagtite A cave formation that hangs down (just remember lads, tites come down!).
Stop Descending device based on two bobbins, one fixed, one attached to a handle. Blue in colour.
Stop! Whoa! No more! Desist!......er.. Stop!
Sump Submerged section of cave passage.
Sump Lowest part of car, often torn off on track to Bull Pot Farm.
Table Item used for bizarre post - pub rituals and challenges. Cheaper than virgins.
Tackle Shiny metal stuff taken underground to do with, often dropped down big holes by mistake.
Tackle Sack Contains the Tackle dropped down the big hole.
Tackle Saviour Berk that has to rescues the above from big holes.
Traverse Means of straddling passage when floor disappears.
Walk in Walk out beware, much danger ahead, walk in to location, descend mile deep squeezy, rat-filled, flooded, collapsing pot to face certain peril and possible loss of life, ascend through same on failing rope. Get through that and walk out of location.
Water What knees are reduced to after Crawl.
Weils Disease Rare but very unpleasant gut - rot caught from rats piddle.
Wetsocks Worn to stop your wellies falling off (and to keep your feet warm).
Wetsuit Worn in really wet caves by soft cavers.
