Location
Mine #1 SH 605(53) 480(89) (Elevation 908ft)

Mine #2 SH 605(77) 482(93) (Elevation 954ft)

Directions
Park in the layby by the Sygun Copper mine (show mine) and take the public footpath that passes through the grounds of the mine and follow it all the way to the top of the mountain.

At the brow you will see some spoil (it’s a very small quarry) and the path forks left and right.

Turn right to see Mine #1 (on the left as you walk along the path – look for the spoil heap). For mine #2, instead, turn left at the brow and continue upwards and over a stile (on a level with some disused buildings (almost razed)).

Access
Ungated. No known permissions required.

Suggested Equipment
None.

Length
Mine #1 75feet
Mine #2 Unknown

Flood risk
Mine #1 None known but ought to be impossible
Mine #2 Unknown

Mine Attributes
Copper. Evidence of sulphur, iron and fools gold in the spoil (mine #2)

Description

Mine #1
A small mine extending inwards around 75 feet with a fork close to the end leading to two blind trials.

This mine is virtually devoid of decoration and is almost certainly an early failed trial.

Water is just above ankle depth but the passage can be straddled easily.

Mine #2
There are two entrances to this mine (one above the other, the upper onebeing around 40 feet immediately above the lower).

The lower entrance is a short belly crawl into a flooded adit which is around 6 inches deep and leads inwards an unknown distance.

The upper entrance facilitates a very awkward (risk of falling) descent (presumably) to the adit below with an open stope.

Although the length of this mine is unknown it is likely to be reasonable based on the amount of spoil outside as well as the fact that old man deemed it worthy to build a couple of buildings outside the entrance.

Note : there are many more mines on Mynydd Sygun that are yet to be located and recorded
